Where to Place Your Pergola

Here are some key considerations when deciding where to place your pergola.

Choosing the right outdoor living amenities can enhance and extend your time outside. A pergola is one such amenity. It adds beauty to your space and serves the function of casting shade. That’s assuming you install your pergola in the right spot. A pergola could diminish your outdoor experience if placed in an unwise spot. You can make the most of your pergola by making wise choices. Here are some key considerations when deciding where to place your pergola.

Consider Intended Use

Consider how you will use your pergola. Do you want it to provide shade for outdoor dining, a seating area, or a hot tub? Your intended use should determine the pergola’s location. If you want to use your pergola as a dining area, you’ll want to place it close to your outdoor kitchen or grill area.

Situated for Shade

Ideally, you want to orient your pergola to target the afternoon sun, as this is when you will need the most shade. Pergolas are a great way to add instant shade for that afternoon enjoyment of your outdoor living area. Other forms of shade, like trees, take much longer to establish. But nobody wants a fantastic new outdoor space they can’t enjoy because it’s too hot.

A good tip is to orient the longest side of the pergola in a north-south direction. This placement offers optimal shade when the sun reaches its highest point during the summer, creating a relaxed and shaded retreat.

Don’t Block the View

Another essential consideration is the view from your pergola. You don’t want the pergola to block the view but rather “frame it” from under the space. You must also consider how the pergola affects the view from other places. Maybe it perfectly frames a picturesque view when you sit underneath it, but it completely blocks the view from the patio. The goal is to situate the pergola somewhere that doesn’t negatively impact the view from the rest of the yard.

Consider Privacy

Privacy is another essential factor when choosing your pergola’s location. Place your pergola in an area away from neighbors or the street. You can also use plants or other landscaping elements to create a more private setting around your pergola. Or, add curtains that coordinate with your patio set and create that restful retreat when you don’t feel like conversing with neighbors.
